Vol. 48 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Creamery for Ballydehob, County Cork.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state why he has refused sanction for the erection of a branch creamery by the Cork and Kerry Creamery Company in Ballydehob seeing that a creamery is badly required in the district and that the farmers interested are not in a position to erect a creamery on co-operative lines.

It would not be in accordance with the policy of making the creamery industry in this country co-operative to issue a licence to a proprietary body for the erection of an auxiliary creamery at Ballydehob.

I understand that a neighbouring co-operative society is considering the question of erecting an auxiliary at this place.

Am I to understand from the Minister that the creamery, considering the question of erecting an auxiliary at Ballydehob, would be the Drinagh creamery—is that right?

Dr. Ryan

Yes.

Is the Minister aware that Drinagh is far away from Ballydehob, and does he know if that matter has been under consideration for a very long time by the Drinagh Co-operative Society? The Minister is aware that the time is passing, and it is essential that something should be done; perhaps the Minister would do something to hurry them up?

Dr. Ryan

The matter would be expedited if the local people would guarantee a certain number of shares.

That is the difficulty. They are all smallholders and occupiers.

Dr. Ryan

But the Deputy knows that the money for the shares would be collected from them over a number of years.
