Vol. 48 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drainage of Brick and Cashen Rivers.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that extensive flooding and destruction are caused in North Kerry by the Brick and Cashen rivers and if he will state what is the present position with regard to the drainage of these rivers and what amount of money his Department is prepared to provide towards the cost of the drainage scheme.

The Commissioners of Public Works are aware of the conditions prevailing in the Brick-Cashen district, County Kerry, and are proceeding with their investigations with a view to preparing a scheme for the improvement of the drainage conditions. These investigations are necessarily protracted, involving the collection of a large volume of detailed information in order to devise the most suitable scheme and, although they are being expedited, a considerable time must yet elapse before a detailed drainage scheme can be prepared and submitted to the occupiers of the affected lands.

The Minister for Finance is prepared to contribute 50 per cent. of the total actual cost and expenses of carrying out an approved scheme.
