Vol. 49 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Recruitment of Men on State Aided Works.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will lay on the Table of the House and circulate to Deputies copies of the amended instructions issued to county surveyors and employment exchange managers regarding the method of recruiting men on State-aided works.

I would refer the Deputy to the answer given to a question asked by Deputy Mulcahy on this subject on the 13th June last. That reply contains a summary of the instructions issued from time to time to the local officers of my Department, and now in force, regarding the selection of men for employment on works financed wholly or partly from Central Funds. I do not intend to lay copies of the actual instructions themselves on the Table of the House. I have not issued any instructions to county surveyors as these officers are not under my control.

In view of the statement made in this House by the Minister for Education, when he was acting for the Minister for Industry and Commerce, and of the statement made by the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Finance, in answer to Deputy Mulcahy, on the 30th June, will the Minister state, for the information of the House, what the exact position is at the moment?

It is as stated in the reply of the 30th June.

But, in view of the statements made in this House on the 30th June, will the Minister now say what is the position.

The position is as stated in the reply of the 30th June.

So that the statements of the Acting-Minister and of the Parliamentary Secretary were not accurate?

They were accurate.

Will the Minister say whether he is aware that there are parts of the country where his instructions do not apply?

I am not aware.

Is he aware that the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Finance said that there are such places and that they include Mayo?

Will the Minister undertake to look into this matter because there is a very big hole in his scheme if what the Parliamentary Secretary said is accurate?
