Vol. 49 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Relief Schemes and Unemployment Insurance.

(An Clár) asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state when a decision will be arrived at by his Department regarding the unemployment insurance stamps of the men who worked on the Fergus Drainage Scheme and in respect of whom (with others) a decision has been asked from his Department by the Office of Public Works.

Applications have been received from the Commissioners of Public Works for decisions under Section 10, Unemployment Insurance Act, 1920, in respect of 12 workers employed on various relief schemes throughout the country. The cases which have been submitted are typical of the kinds of work performed on all the relief schemes carried out by the Commissioners, including the Fergus Drainage Scheme, and the decisions, when given, will be applicable to all cases where identical work is performed. The cases require a good deal of consideration and I am not at the moment in a position to say when decisions will be given.

Mr. Hogan

Will the Minister say what does he mean by a good deal of consideration? Is he aware that this matter has been under consideration for three or four months?

The circumstances of the cases which have been selected as test cases have to be very carefully considered so that the decisions given will be capable of determining the course of action in respect of all similar cases in future.

Mr. Hogan

May we expect a decision in a month or six weeks?
