Vol. 51 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Roscrea Incidents.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that on Friday, 9th March, and on subsequent dates prior to St. Patrick's Day a threatening mob strove to prevent the local branch committee of the United Ireland organisation from meeting in the Portarlington Arms Hotel, Roscrea; if he is further aware that several members of the committee were assaulted, one member, a priest from the locality, receiving serious facial injuries; if he will state what steps, if any, have been taken to bring the perpetrators of the outrage to justice, and what measures, if any, will be taken to ensure in the future that the law-abiding citizens of Roscrea will be allowed to go about. their ordinary peaceful avocations without being thus molested.

The entire history of the events to which the Deputy refers has been reported by the police to their legal advisers for instructions as to whether prosecutions should take place. In the meantime, it would be improper for me to say any more than that the police, in Roscrea as elsewhere, are doing their best to prevent provocation and assaults between political groups.
