Vol. 55 No. 4

Public Business. - Vote No. 66—Army Pensions.

I move:—

Go ndeontar suim Bhreise ná raghaidh thar £11,200 chun íoctha an Mhuirir a thiocfaidh chun bheith iníoctha i rith na bliana dar críoch an 31adh Márta, 1935, chun Pinscan Créachta agus Míabaltachta, Pinsean Breise agus Pinsean Fear Pósta, Liúntaisí agus Aiscí (Uimh. 26 de 1923, Uimh. 12. de 1927, agus Uimh. 24 de 1932), chun Pinsean Seirbhíse Míleata (Uimh. 48 de 1924 agus Uimh. 43 de 1934) agus chun Ranníocanna agus Costaisí iolardha ina dtaobh san, etc.

That a Supplementary sum not exceeding £11,200 be granted to defray the Charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending 31st March, 1935, for Wound and Disability Pensions, Further Pensions and Married Pensions, Allowances and Gratuities (No. 26 of 1923, No. 12 of 1927, and No. 24 of 1932) for Military Service Pensions (No. 48 of 1924 and No. 43 of 1934) and for sundry Contributions and Expenses in respect thereof, etc.

Last August a Supplementary Estimate for £80,000 for Army pensions was passed by the Dáil and was intended to cover expenditure under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934, but as that Act was not passed until September 13th, 1934, it became necessary to introduce another Supplementary Estimate in order to regularise the position. In presenting this new Estimate the opportunity has been taken to revise the former Supplementary Estimate in the light of the fact that it was not possible to get the administrative machinery functioning as early as was anticipated and that, in consequence, the number of cases to be dealt with during the present financial year will be less than was originally expected. Hence, the present Estimate is in substitution for that passed last August and the Dáil is now asked to approve the sum of £18,600 instead of the £80,000 then voted. Further, savings on other subheads of the Vote to the extent of £7,400 have been effected and these have been used to offset the gross sum of £18,600, leaving a net sum of £11,200 to be voted in the present Supplementary Estimate.

Vote agreed to.
