Written Answers. - Armed Attacks and Illegal Activities.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state whether the persons who are reported on the 10th November last to have stripped and robbed two members of the new Volunteer Force of their uniforms, outside Strokestown, at night, have been identified and charged; and if so, if he will state whether they have been convicted and what punishment was imposed.

I have no information in regard to this outrage, which, if it took place, was not reported to the police.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state whether the persons who attempted to blow up a house at Cartron, Kilmore, Drumsna, County Leitrim, by means of a mine, on the night of the 23rd October last, have been identified and charged, and if so, if he will state before what type of court they were charged, and if convicted what punishment was imposed.

No person has been charged in connection with this outrage. Investigations are proceeding.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state whether the persons who endeavoured to blow up a shop in Carrick-on-Shannon by means of a land mine, on the 23rd October last, have been identified and charged; and if so, if he will state before what type of court they were charged, and if convicted what punishment was imposed.

In this case a suspect was arrested under the provisions of Part 3 of Article 2A of the Constitution. On his refusal to account for his movements he was brought before the Constitution (Special Powers) Tribunal and charged with this offence. He was convicted and sentenced to three months' imprisonment.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state whether the armed and masked men who raided the home of Mr. Timothy Murphy, Bedford, Listowel, on the morning of 31st July last, have been identified and charged; and if so, if he will state before what type of court they were charged, and if convicted what punishment was imposed; and whether the arms carried on the occasion have been traced and taken possession of by the police.

No person has been charged in connection with this outrage and investigations are proceeding.

asked the Minister for Justice whether the armed and masked persons who assaulted a member of the new Volunteer Force at Midleton, on the night of the 2nd October last, have been identified and charged, and if so, if he will state before what type of court they were charged, and if convicted what punishment was imposed; and whether the arms carried on the occasion have been traced and taken possession of by the police.

I have nothing to add to the reply which I have already given to the same question on a previous occasion.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state how many of the armed body who attacked the house of Mr. Patrick Quirke, Lickeen, Glencar, on the night of Thursday, 6th September last, have since been identified and charged, and if he will state before what type of court they were charged, and if convicted what punishment was imposed, and if he will state whether the arms carried on the occasion have been traced and taken possession of by the police.

I have nothing to add to the reply which I have already given to the same question on a previous occasion. Eleven persons have been remanded in custody to the next sitting of the Central Criminal Court on charges arising out of this outrage.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state whether the persons who forcibly entered the League of Youth Hall at Bridgetown, County Wexford, on the 30th June/1st July last, damaged the doors and roof and destroyed tables, chairs and a billiard table and other contents of the hall, have since been identified and charged; and if so, if he will state the type of court before which they were charged, and if convicted the punishment imposed.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state whether the masked and armed men who raided a number of houses in the townlands of Drommerin and Gortnamincha, near Listowel, on Sunday, 10th June, have been identified and charged; and if so, if he will state before what type of court they were charged, and if convicted what punishment was imposed; and whether the arms carried on the occasion have been traced and taken possession of by the police.

The answer to questions Nos. 43 and 44 is the same. No person has been charged in connection with either of these outrages, and investigations are proceeding.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state whether any of the arms carried by the 50 armed men who paraded through Irremore, near Listowel, and raided a number of houses, on the night of the 12th May last, have been traced and taken possession of by the police; whether any of the persons guilty of this outrage have been identified and charged; and if so, before what type of court they were charged, and if convicted what punishment was imposed.

In this case three persons who were suspected of participation in the raids referred to were arrested. In the case of one of these persons the proceedings took place before the Central Criminal Court. The accused was convicted and sentenced to four months' imprisonment with hard labour. The other two persons were brought before the Constitution (Special Powers) Tribunal. They were both convicted and sentenced to three months' imprisonment with hard labour, not to be enforced if they entered into recognisances to keep the peace.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state whether the armed men who maliciously burned the Cornofean Hall, near Arva, on 3rd May last, have yet been identified and charged; and if so, if he will state before what type of court they were charged, and if convicted. what punishment was imposed; and if he will state whether the arms carried on the occasion have been traced and taken possession of by the police.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state whether the persons who made an armed attack on persons in Cliffoney, County Sligo, on the night of the 28th-29th April last have yet been identified and charged; and if so, if he will state before what type of court they were charged, and if convicted what punishment was imposed; and whether the arms carried on the occasion have been traced and taken possession of by the police.

The answer to questions Nos. 46 and 47 is the same. No person has been charged in connection with either of these outrages and investigations are proceeding.
