Vol. 56 No. 17

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment Schemes.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether in view of the fact that large numbers of men who were employed on building schemes are now owing to the completion of many of those schemes, unemployed, he will urge on local authorities the necessity of undertaking, as soon as possible, necessary sewerage and other schemes which would give employment.

I cannot accept as an accurate description of the general position the implication contained in the first part of the question that large numbers of men employed on building schemes are now unemployed. The number employed on such schemes throughout the Saorstát has remained constant since November last. There has been a decrease in the number of unskilled men employed on schemes in Tipperary N.R. which are nearing completion. In the South Riding of the county tenders are being invited for over 600 cottages. In the urban districts in the North and South Ridings of the country, with the exception of Nenagh, new schemes which are well advanced should absorb all unskilled labour that has been temporarily unemployed.
