Vol. 56 No. 19

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Lough Gara and Mantua Drainage.

asked the Minister for Finance if he can state when the improvement of the Lough Gara and Mantua drainage scheme will be put in hand.

Since the scheme was submitted to the County Councils of Sligo and Roscommon some minor extensions have been suggested, and these are at present under consideration. If it is decided to include these extensions in the scheme, the financial aspect of the scheme as submitted to the County Councils will be altered, and it may be necessary to make adjustments in the contributions required from the local authorities.

It is not yet possible to state when work will be started on the Lough Gara and Mantua Drainage Scheme. The proposal when finally formulated has to be exhibited, and the occupiers of lands to be improved given an opportunity of expressing their assent or dissent. If a majority is in favour, an inquiry into any objections will be held later, and the investigator's recommendations considered, prior to the scheme being submitted for confirmation.

These preliminaries will take time, but efforts will be made to expedite the proposal as far as possible.

Will the Minister be good enough to say who proposed the minor alterations in this scheme? The scheme was adopted by the Roscommon County Council in the form in which it was sent down by the Board of Works.

I shall have to have notice of that question.

Am I to take it from the Minister's courteous and ample reply that we may expect this scheme to be put in hands in 1942?

As I have indicated already, efforts will be made to expedite the proposal as much as possible.

And I am suggesting 1942, judging from the Minister's record.
