Vol. 59 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment Relief Moneys.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he can make available for the informatiion of Deputies details of his proposals for the expenditure of the sum it is proposed to expend on the relief of unemployment and distress and indicate the sum which will be allocated for this purpose in the area of each local authority.

In my statement on the introduction of the Supplementary Vote for the relief of unemployment and distress, yesterday evening, I informed the Dáil of the proposed distribution of the Vote as between different subheads of expenditure.

Information on the subject of the allocation of the Vote county by county will be made available for Deputies as soon as possible after final sanctions for individual schemes have been given; but statistics are not collected to show the distribution of the Vote as between the areas of local authorities.

Might I ask the Parliamentary Secretary whether the sum provided in yesterday's Supplementary Estimates is the total sum of money which will be available in the current financial year for the purpose of coping with the serious unemployment problem which exists?

That would be a matter of prophecy.

Some people think the Parliamentary Secretary is a prophet.

The whole Front Bench.

The Parliamentary Secretary is not included in that number.

Has the Government then ceased to prophesy?
