Vol. 59 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Damage by Rabbits.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that the granting of 3d. per head bounty on rabbits exported has not achieved any satisfactory results in the matter of materially lessening the number of these pests; and if he has under consideration any further or better scheme for the protection of crops against the widespread damage caused by the ever increasing number of rabbits in the country.

There was practically no export of rabbits during the summer months. Since September, however, there has been a considerable increase in the export of rabbits, and a large number of claims for payment of bounty are now being received. It is yet too early to express a definite opinion as to whether the bounty will effect the desired object.

My Department is keeping in touch with the experiments which are being carried out with the object of destroying rabbits by poisonous gases, but these experiments have not yet been concluded.

Is the Minister in a position to inform the House if there is any form of quadruped in this country now that it is not the Minister's policy to destroy?

Dr. Ryan

We should include bipeds.

You did your best.
