Vol. 59 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Industrial Statistics.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will publish a return showing for each of the trade groups dealt with in taking the census of industrial production the number of (1) new factories opened, (2) factories extended, and (3) factories closed, in each of the years 1932, 1933 and 1934

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will publish a return showing for (1) Leinster, (2) Munster, (3) Connacht, and (4) Ulster (three counties), the number of (a) new industries opened, (b) factories extended, and (c) factories closed during the year (1) 1932, (2) 1933, and (3) 1934; and the total employment provided in December, 1934, by the new factories opened in (1) 1932, (2) 1933, and (3) 1934.

I propose to reply to Questions Nos. 5 and 6 together.

I have considered the Deputy's question carefully and am of opinion that it is not practicable to publish a return on the lines suggested.

Will the Minister say how, if it were possible for him a couple of years ago to indicate that 100 new factories and so many new workshops had been set up, it is not possible to indicate now the number of new factories set up even in the different counties? Will the Minister say if he is doing anything to get a list of the new factories set up during the last three years?

A survey is being made of existing and new industries but it will not be completed for some months.

Have any instructions been given as to the basis on which that survey is to be prepared?

Will the Minister lay a copy of those instructions in the Library?

No. It is being done departmentally.
