Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral—Answers. - Railway Workers' Employment.

andMr. Corish asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that owing to the dislocation of the railway services in 1922-1923 a considerable number of railway workers were deprived of their employment for several months, and that these men were not subsequently reimbursed for the loss of wages suffered during the period of involuntary unemployment, and whether it is his intention to introduce proposals for legislation to enable the payment of compensation to the men concerned.

I am aware that in the disturbed period of 1922-1923 a number of railway workers, in common with other workers, were temporarily disemployed for varying periods. It is not proposed to introduce legislation in this connection as it has not been found practicable to provide compensation for losses of a consequential nature sustained by any section of the community as a result of the disturbed conditions in the period in question.
