Vol. 60 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Home-Grown Wheat.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the total quantity and value of home-grown wheat used by millers in the Free State in the manufacture of wheaten flour in each of the years 1931, 1932, 1933, 1934 and 1935.

The particulars of home-grown wheat used by millers in the manufacture of wheaten flour are not furnished separately from that used in the manufacture of wheaten meal on the returns furnished in connection with the Census of Production.

According to these returns, the quantities and values of home-grown wheat used by flour millers in the manufacture of wheaten flour and of wheaten meal during the years 1931, 1932, 1933 and 1934 were:—

Particulars regarding the year 1935 are not yet available.

Will the Minister say when he expects particulars to be available in respect to the year 1935?

I cannot say.

Will the Minister say why it is impossible to get separate statistics for the amount of wheat used in the manufacture of wheaten flour from the amount used in the manufacture of wheaten meal? How can he keep under strict supervision these factors in the situation that have increased the cost of bread if he does not get the amount of wheat that is used in the manufacture of wheaten flour?

It can be done.

The Minister says it has not been done. Will the Minister say that it will now be done in respect of the years that I have mentioned, and whether in respect of the years 1934 and 1935 he can get from the millers the separate amounts in respect of flour and meal?

So far as the Prices Commission are concerned, they can get any information they want.

Do I understand, then that, if suitable representations are made to the Prices Commission, it will ascertain this for the information of the House?

Well, for the information of whoever may want it?

Whatever information the Prices Commission decides to publish will be in its official report.
