Vol. 60 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Imported Woodwork and Joinery.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether a number of manufactured doors are being imported for use in working class houses, and whether in view of the number of carpenters now unemployed he is prepared to consider imposing a prohibitive tariff on woodwork and joinery sought to be imported for use in connection with building schemes.

I take it that the Deputy refers to working class houses erected under the Housing (Financial and Miscellaneous Provisions) Acts, 1932-1934. The use of imported doors in the erection of these houses is prohibited under the regulations issued by the Department of Local Government and Public Health and I am not aware that foreign manufactured doors are being used contrary to these regulations. If the Deputy is aware of any particular cases in which the regulations are not being observed, he should communicate the information to the Minister for Local Government and Public Health. With regard to the second part of the question, there is an existing duty of 50 per cent. ad valorem on imported woodwork and joinery.
