Vol. 61 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Leix Sewerage Scheme.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether he has received plans and estimates for the provision of a sewerage scheme for the town of Mountrath, County Leix, and, if so, whether he is prepared to sanction same and whether, in view of the number of able-bodied unemployed living in and around this town, he will recommend the allocation of a grant from the Unemployment Relief Vote in order to enable this scheme to be provided at a reasonable cost to the ratepayers of the area concerned.

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. The water supply recently installed in Mountrath has not been fully availed of. In September last only 21 houses out of 448 had been connected. If there is likely to be an increase in the number of houses connected to the water supply that would warrant the expenditure on a water-carriage sewerage system the question of giving sanction to a sewerage scheme in next financial year will be considered. No opinion can at present be expressed as regards the allocation of a grant.
