Vol. 62 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cured Mackerel.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state the number of barrels of cured mackerel and the value of same exported under the bounty scheme of last year, and if he is prepared to continue this bounty during the coming autumn season.

Under the experimental scheme in operation last year for securing to our fishermen a guaranteed minimum price for their landings of mackerel, a total of 2,568 barrels of pickled mackerel value £4,198 was exported during the two months ended 1st December, 1935. While not prepared at present to give a definite undertaking on the subject, I shall be willing to consider in due course representations from those engaged in the industry for a renewal of the scheme during the coming autumn.

Would the Minister say, for the purpose of information, what was the destination of most of this cured mackerel?

Dr. Ryan

It was sent to two or three countries, principally to the United States.
