Vol. 62 No. 17

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tariff Commission.

asked the Minister for Finance whether the Tariff Commission have been asked to inquire into and report on any tariffs that were imposed within the past four years; and, if so, if he will state the nature of such tariffs.

The only matters relating to the imposition, modification; abolition or removal of a Customs duty referred to the Tariff Commission for their consideration during the last four years have been in connection with the following: (a) bacon, hams and other pig products; (b) prayer books; (c) casks and barrels; (d) vegetable and animal oils. The commission investigated the first three mentioned references and their reports on bacon and pig products and on prayer books have been published. The report of the commission on casks and barrels has been submitted to the Executive Council but has not yet been published. The reference to the commission in regard to vegetable and animal oils was withdrawn in October, 1934.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state whether any reports have been received from the Tariff Commission which have not yet been published; and, if so, if he will state what are the subjects of such reports and when they are likely to be made public.

The only report received from the Tariff Commission which has not yet been published is that in relation to the question of the desirability of imposing a Customs duty on casks and barrels. The report has been under examination by the Departments concerned, and no decision has yet been taken in regard to publication.

Can the Minister say how long has the report been under consideration by the Department?

I am afraid that is a separate question.

May I ask the Minister the question again, as it arises directly out of the Minister's answer?
