Vol. 63 No. 12

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Boilermen and Sunday Work.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that the Order making the work of boilermen and enginemen engaged in the production and generation of steam excepted work for the purposes of Section 49 of the Conditions of Employment Act, 1936, prevents such workers from working a short period on Sunday under sub-section (2) of the section; and, if so, if he will amend the Order to permit of such Sunday work.

The Conditions of Employment (Boilermen and Enginemen) (Exclusion) Order, 1936, permits the type of workers mentioned in the question to work any number of hours on Sunday up to the limits of a full normal day. I am prepared to consider further representations with a view to the amendment of the Order as suggested by the Deputy, but I cannot anticipate what my decision will be until the views of representatives of employers and of workers interested are obtained.
