Vol. 64 No. 4

Written Answer. - Town Labourers' Wages.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the weekly wages of, and the number of hours worked by (a) builders' labourers, and (b) general town labourers, in each of the towns of Ardee, Arklow, Athlone, Athy, Bagenalstown, Bailieboro', Balbriggan, Ballina, Ballinasloe, Ballinrobe, Bally-bofey, Ballyshannon, Baltinglass, Bandon, Bantry, Belturbet, Birr, Boyle, Bray, Cahir, Cahirciveen, Carlow, Carrick-on-Suir, Cashel, Castlebar, Castle-blaney, Castlecomer, Castlepollard, Cavan, Claremorris, Clifden, Clonakilty Clones, Clonmel, Cork, Dingle, Donegal, Drogheda, Droichead Nua, Dublin, Dundalk, Dunfanaghy, Dungarvan, Dungloe, Dun Laoghaire, Dunmanway, Edenderry, Ennis, Ennistymon, Ennis-corthy, Fermoy, Galway, Gorey, Kells, Kenmare, Kildare, Kilkenny, Killarney, Kilmallock, Killybegs, Kilrush, Kinsale, Letterkenny, Limerick, Listowel, Longford, Macroom, Mallow, Manor-hamilton, Midleton, Monaghan, Mullingar, Navan, Nenagh, Newcastle West, New Ross, Passage West, Portarlington and Mountmellick, Port-laoighise, Rathdowney, Roscommon, Roscrea, Skibbereen, Sligo, Swinford, Thomastown, Thurles, Tipperary, Tralee, Trim, Tullamore, Tullow, Waterford, Westport, Wexford, Wicklow, Youghal, (1) in the year 1931, or the nearest preceding year for which the information is available, and (2) for the year 1936, or the nearest preceding year for which the information is available.

The information at my disposal as to the rates of wages and hours of work in various centres in the country is not sufficiently definite to enable me to provide a specific reply to this question. As the Deputy is no doubt aware, the rates of wages and, prior to the coming into operation of the Conditions of Employment Act, hours of work of building labourers and general unskilled town labourers varied considerably even in the same town.
