Vol. 64 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Widows' and Orphans' Pensions.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether any arrangements have yet been made whereby widows' and orphans' contributory pensions may be paid to Saorstát citizens who transfer their residence to Northern Ireland and Great Britain.

Arrangements are being made whereby persons who are entitled to contributory pensions under the Widows' and Orphans' Pensions Act, and who change their residence to Great Britain or Northern Ireland, may cash the weekly pension orders at post offices in these countries. Pending the completion of these arrangements, contributory pensions are paid monthly to persons resident in Northern Ireland or Great Britain by means of payable orders issued directly to the pensioners.

Did I understand the Minister to say that arrangements have been made or that arrangements are being made?

The arrangements are not yet completed. They are being made for the last couple of months.

Would the Minister say whether it is possible that Saorstát residents who desire to transfer their residence to Northern Ireland can have their weekly pensions paid them in Northern Ireland?

They have their contributory pensions paid there monthly at present.

Am I to take it that the right to obtain a pension and have it payable in Northern Ireland would not extend to non-contributory pensions, or would a person entitled to a non-contributory pension in Saorstát Eireann retain her right to it if she left for Northern Ireland or Great Britain?

The arrangement applies to all pensions.

Is the Minister sure of that?

I am not, but I think so.

The Minister might look into that and give us fuller information.

Mr. Hogan

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state what is the total amount paid each week under the provisions of the Widows' and Orphans' Pensions Act, 1935, in respect of (a) widows and (b) orphans.
