Vol. 66 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Harbour Dues at Balbriggan.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether his attention was directed to the resolution adopted at a meeting of the local branch of the Labour Party protesting against the proposal to increase the harbour dues chargeable at Balbriggan; whether he is aware that if effect is given to the order authorising an increase in the harbour dues, a large amount of tonnage will be diverted from the harbour, involving a loss of £4,000 per annum in wages, and displacing the labour of 70 men; and whether, before authorising any increase in the dues charged hitherto, he is prepared to inquire into the condition of the harbour, the nature of the services it provides, and the effect of increased dues on the available quayside employment in Balbriggan.

My attention was directed to the resolution referred to, but I am not aware that the result of an increase in the harbour dues would be as suggested in the question. As regards the remainder of the question, I would refer the Deputy to an answer given on the 21st July last to a question by Deputy Corish regarding the condition of Balbriggan harbour. An application for an order increasing the harbour dues chargeable at Balbriggan is at present under consideration in my Department. The Harbours (Regulation of Rates) Act, 1934, requires public notice to be given of any proposal to make a Harbour Rates Order. Due consideration will be given to any representations received in response to the public notice which will be given in due course in regard to the proposed increase of charges at Balbriggan.
