Vol. 66 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Imports of Stout.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that there have been considerable imports of stout or porter into the Saorstát during the year 1936; and if he will state what quantity of this stout or porter entered into consumption in this country.

A considerable quantity of stout, as compared with previous years, was imported in the year ended 31st December, 1936. Some of the stout imported prior to the 5th June, 1936, was retained for consumption in the Saorstát, but all the stout imported between that date and the end of the year was exported. As compared with the total quantity imported during the year, the quantity retained for home consumption was negligible.

The reply the Minister has given is at variance with the facts of the case. Is the Minister aware that, in 1935, there were imported into this country 40,493 standard barrels——

There is nothing in the question about 1935. Is the Deputy making a speech?

I am entitled to put a supplementary question. Is the Minister further aware that, in 1936, 128,825 barrels were imported? That shows an increase of 88,332 barrels on the figure for 1935.

There was nothing about this in the question put to me.

I do not consider the Minister's reply satisfactory, and I wanted to obviate the loss of time that would be entailed by raising the matter on the adjournment. I now give notice that I shall raise the matter on the adjournment.

The Deputy asked me if I was aware that there had been considerable imports of stout or porter into the Saorstát during the year 1936. My answer was: "A considerable quantity of stout, as compared with previous years, was imported in the year ended 31st December, 1936." I have nothing to add to that.

You have got yourself into a mess, and you will have to get out of it.

From the figures at my disposal, it must be assumed that a considerable quantity of the increased imports remained for consumption in the country.

That is what I want the Minister to say.

I answered the question asked.
