asked the Minister for Agriculture whether his Department have shipped any fat cattle or store cattle to any European port outside Great Britain since January 1st, 1937; and, if so, if he will furnish the following particulars (1) the port or ports to which these shipments were made; (2) the numbers and class of cattle shipped to each port; (3) the average price received f.o.b. Dublin per cwt. live weight for each class of cattle shipped in each shipment or in such shipments as these figures are available for.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Export of Cattle.
Dr. Ryan
As the reply contains much information of a statistical kind. I propose to have it circulated in the Official Report.
Would the Minister be good enough to extract for oral answer the reply to part 3 of the question— the average price received f.o.b. Dublin per cwt. live weight for each class of cattle shipped.
Dr. Ryan
Part 3 is the part that contains most of the figures. The Deputy asked me for the price for each class of cattle shipped in each shipment. The answer is given in a number of long tables.
Could the Minister not give the general average figure?
Dr. Ryan
No.
Perhaps the Minister does not want to give it. He might blush.
Dr. Ryan
The Deputy will be agreeably surprised to find that this is a good paying business.
The reply to the question was as follows:
The Continental ports to which fat cattle have been exported by the Department since 1st January, 1937, and the number and classes of cattle exported to each port are as follows:—
Bremen—
4,898 bullocks
171 heifers
217 cows
Antwerp—
210 bullocks and heifers
690 cows
11 bulls
The cattle are not sold f.o.b. Dublin. After deducting from the prices obtained in Germany and Belgium freight and other charges borne by the Department, the average net returns realised by the Department for the cattle comprised in the consignments shipped from Dublin since 1st January, 1937, to Bremen and Antwerp in respect of which payments have been received up to the present date are as follows:—
BREMEN (Germany).

The foregoing figures are still subject to slight adjustments when the accounts are completed. The cattle shipped to Germany were of superior grade compared with those shipped to Belgium. No store cattle were exported by the Department.
