Vol. 66 No. 4

Committee on Finance. - Vote 17—Rates on Government Property.

I move:—

Go ndeontar suim ná raghaidh thar £64,600 chun slánuithe na suime is gá chun íoctha an Mhuirir a thiocfaidh chun bheith iníoctha i rith na bliana dar críoch an 31adh lá de Mhárta, 1938, chun Rátaí agus Síntiúisí in ionad Rátaí, etc., i dtaobh Maoine Rialtais, agus chun-Síntiúisí mar chabhair chun íoctha Rátaí ar Aitreabhacha 1 seilbh Ionadaithe do Rialtaisí Coigríche.

That a sum not exceeding £64,600 be granted to complete the sum necessary to defray the Charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending on the 31st day of March, 1938, for Rates and Contributions in lieu of Rates, etc., in respect of Government Property, and for Contributions towards Rates on Premises occupied by Representatives of External Governments.

The provision of £96,900 for the year 1937-38 shows a net increase of £730 on the figure for last year. This increase is largely accounted for by payments which it is expected will fall to be made in respect of additional land intended to be acquired for forestry purposes. Under the provisions of the Valuation Acts, 1852 and 1854, property in the occupation of the State is exempt from assessment for rates, but since 1874ex gratia contributions have been made by the State towards the expenses of local rating authorities in return for benefits enjoyed. This Vote is intended to cover such payments.

Vote put and agreed to.
