Vol. 73 No. 2

Written Answers. - Pigs Exportation Quota Certificates.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state for what number of pigs or quantity in cwts. shipped alive to Great Britain for conversion into bacon are monthly "Exportation Quota Certificates" issued; also, if he will state the method of distribution of these "Exportation Quota Certificates" and what conditions are required for them.

The number of live pigs which may be exported under quota certificates for conversion into bacon in Great Britain varies from month to month inasmuch as it is determined each month by reference to the total monthly quota which comprises manufactured bacon as well as live pigs and pork carcases for conversion into bacon. This year the monthly quota for such live pigs, in terms of cwts. of bacon, has varied from 1,844 to 4,331.

The quota for live pigs is distributed amongst shippers in proportion to their exports in the preceding calendar year. Exporters must be registered in the Register of Pig Exporters kept under the Bacon and Pigs (Regulation of Export) Order, 1933, and must furnish undertakings to export the number of live pigs allotted to them.
