Vol. 74 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Sligo Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands if he can state what progress has been made by the Land Commission in the acquisition of the lands of Annaghmore or Monasteraden, County Sligo, which are in the occupation of Martin and Mary Brennan.

The Land Commission are not yet in a position to state whether proceedings will be taken for the acquisition of the lands of Annaghmore or Monasteraden, in the occupation of Martin and Anne Brennan, which are the subject of inquiry.

Can the Minister indicate from the information at his disposal whether an inquiry was in fact ever instituted by the Land Commission with a view to the acquisition of those lands and, if so, the approximate date of the inquiry?

Mr. Boland

My information is that there was an inquiry somewhere about December, 1937. There may have been one prior to that, but if there was I have no knowledge of it.

Can the Minister state definitely that the delay in acquiring those lands has not been due to any dispute or doubt as to title on the part of the owners of those lands?

Mr. Boland

As far as I know there was never any question of title in the matter. It is simply a question of the Land Commission not being able to reach it.

There is great scarcity of turbary in this district, affecting upwards of 60 families. I should like an assurance from the Minister that he will ask the Land Commission to expedite proceedings with a view to the acquisition of those particular lands.

Mr. Boland

I will ask them to do that.
