Vol. 76 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Raspberries.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that fruit growers in the County Meath obtained only 4d. per lb. for raspberries last year, compared with 4¾d. per lb. procured for a heavy crop in 1929; and whether, in view of representations on the matter made to him by a recent deputation, he will introduce legislation to deal with the price of raspberries.

I am not aware of the price raspberry growers received for the crop grown in the year 1929. As a result of a recent interview which I had with jam manufacturers, the latter have undertaken to pay for this season's crop, on the grower's premises, a price of £38 per ton and for the 1940 crop a minimum price of £38 per ton with a guarantee in respect of both seasons that the whole of the crop will be taken off the growers' hands at not less than this price. In the circumstances, I see no occasion to introduce legislation to deal with the price of raspberries.
