Vol. 78 No. 14

Written Answers. - Cost of Reformatory and Industrial Schools.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the total average weekly cost per head for each of the years 1937, 1938 and 1939, of maintaining the persons committed to reformatory and industrial schools.

The payments made to reformatories and industrial schools are intended to defray all the costs of these institutions, including education and training and there is no information available regarding the proportion of the payments mentioned which could be properly described as the cost of maintenance. The following table gives the average weekly sum per head paid from State funds in respect of persons committed to reformatory and industrial schools for the three years mentioned.

Year Ended

Reformatories

Industrial Schools

31/3/'37

12/9

11/7

31/3/'38

15/8

11/4

31/3/'39

13/1

11/3

The difference between the average sum paid to the reformatories in 1938 and the averages for the other two years mentioned is due to the fact that in that year (1938) a special additional grant was made to the boys' reformatory.
