Vol. 79 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Export of Seed Potatoes.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that the quantity of seed potatoes exported this year under the seed potato export scheme is much less than the quantity normally exported, and that the price offered at present is very unsatisfactory; also if he will state whether representatives of reputable British firms were invited over as usual by his Department to inspect crops during the growing season, and what measures are being taken, or are proposed, with a view to improving the position; and whether in order to save this valuable industry he is in a position to assure growers that more satisfactory conditions will obtain next season.

I am not aware that the quantity of seed potatoes exported this year is less than normal or that the prices offered are very unsatisfactory. Representatives of British firms were invited as usual to inspect crops during the growing season.

As regards the last part of the question, it is obviously impossible to say now what the conditions may be next season, but the Deputy may rest assured that everything possible has been and continues to be done to further this export trade.
