asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that several thousand pounds per annum of tax are being lost to the Exchequer as a result of bets being placed daily with bookmakers in England and Northern Ireland by telephone, telegram and letter; and if he will take immediate and effective steps to end this infringement of the Betting Act.

I am not aware that a considerable leakage of betting duty occurs as a result of bets made with bookmakers outside Éire by persons resident in this country; but if the Deputy will furnish particulars of any such bet I will have inquiry made into the matter.
