Vol. 79 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Unemployment.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, having regard to the difficulty of obtaining employment in the Dublin County Borough area, he will make an order restoring unemployment assistance to all in that area who, since the outbreak of war have been adjudged by the Court of Referees as "not conscientiously seeking work"; and whether he will issue a standstill order in relation to the hearing of such cases until conditions improve.

To be entitled to unemployment assistance an applicant must satisfy all the statutory conditions and be free from all the statutory disqualifications and all applications must be determined in the light of these conditions and in the manner prescribed by the Acts. One of these statutory conditions requires applicants before they can become entitled to unemployment assistance to be capable of work and available for and genuinely seeking but unable to obtain employment suitable for them having regard to their age, sex, physique, education, normal occupation, place of residence, and family circumstances. I have no power to waive this condition either by order or otherwise nor to suspend its operation.
