Vol. 82 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dilution of Wheaten Loaf.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he is yet in a position to state by how much our wheat and flour requirements up to September, 1941, exceed our estimated production and probable imports; if, consequent on above, it is now clear that a completely wheaten loaf cannot be provided up to September; and if he will take steps to have a loaf of mixed components introduced at once so as to avoid the necessity for heavy dilution later.

On the basis of deliveries by millers in the period 23rd March—28th September, 1940, the stocks of wheat with a flour extraction of 95 per cent. and of flour already manufactured are about four weeks below requirements up to the end of September next. I would prefer to maintain all wheaten flour and bread and I am satisfied that the necessary economy to make up the deficit could without hardship be exercised by the community. The whole question is constantly under review in my Department and if the response to my appeals for economy does not prove to be sufficient during the next week or so, flour containing a proportion of other cereals will have to be introduced, the necessary Order having already been drafted.
