Vol. 82 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Turf.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he will state whether he has completed his examination into the prices charged for turf in Dublin, and if he will state (a) the prices now charged to bellmen and other small distributors, (b) the prices now charged by bellmen, and (c) the retail prices now charged for turf by coal merchants; and whether his Department has taken any part in the fixing of these prices.

The investigation into the prices charged for turf in Dublin is not completed. This investigation has shown that the conditions under which turf is purchased in the producing areas, the quality of the turf and the means of transport used in bringing it to Dublin vary considerably as between the different traders engaged in the business and, consequently, it has not been found possible to fix a standard price for turf generally which would be fair to producers, traders and consumers.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply given to his question on the 19th February last. The prices given in that reply are still maintained for turf purchased from the Turf Development Board. Generally speaking, the price charged to bellmen by coal merchants for this turf is 4/- per ton less.

Is it a fact that a monopoly for the distribution of turf has recently been handed over to the Coal Merchants' or Coal Importers' Association?

Do I understand from the Minister that inquiries are still being pursued?

Undoubtedly.
