Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Discharged from the Army.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state, in relation to Sergeant T. Fegan, R.37157, A. Company, 9th Battalion, (1) whether he has been recently discharged from the Army; (2) and, if so, his total period of service in the Army, and the reason for his discharge; (3) his character as assessed at the date of his discharge; (4) the pay and allowances payable to him immediately prior to his discharge; (5) the financial provision, if any, made for him on his discharge from the Army, and (6) if no financial provision has been made for him on his discharge from the Army, whether any examination has been made, and whether he has been given any advice as to the alternatives available for him towards the maintenance of his family, and whether he has been given any assistance to assist him in adopting any of these alternatives.

(1) Sergeant Fegan has been discharged from the Army. (2) He has served therein from the 3rd February, 1923, until the 22nd May, 1942, when he was discharged on the grounds of being medically unfit. (3) His character on discharge was "very good". (4) Immediately prior to discharge, Sergeant Fegan was paid at the rate of 5/- per diem. Marriage allowance at the rate of 4/9 per diem was paid to his wife. (5) The question of granting him the maximum pension payable in his case under the provisions of the Defence Forces (Pensions) Scheme, 1937 to 1940, is under consideration, and he will be notified of the result at the earliest possible date. (6) Does not arise.
