Vol. 88 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Taxi Facilities for Race Meetings.

asked the Minister for Supplies if, in view of the fact that trainers, jockeys and bookmakers are as essential to Irish racing as starters, racing officials, Pressmen, and bank officials, he will state on what grounds he has allowed starters, racing officials, etc., to proceed to race meeting in taxis, and not trainers, jockeys and bookmakers; and, further, if he is now prepared to include trainers, jockeys and bookmakers amongst those eligible to use taxis and private hire vehicles in furtherance of their business, namely, the horse-breeding and racing industry.

I have given very limited facilities for the use of hackney vehicles by persons whom I am satisfied are necessarily employed in connection with the arrangements for the conduct of race meetings. I regret that I am unable to extend similar facilities to persons connected with the horse-breeding and racing industry attending race meetings, in whose case different considerations arise.
