asked the Minister for Justice if he will state in respect of each of the last three years (a) the number of cases in which the renewal of publicans' on-licences was opposed by the Gárdaí authorities, and (b) the number of cases in which the licensing authority refused to renew the licence.

In 1940 the Gárda Síochána opposed the renewal of 22 licences and the courts refused to renew four of those licences. In 1941 the Gárda Síochána opposed the renewal of 31 licences and the courts refused to renew five of those licences. In 1942 the Gárda Síochána opposed the renewal of 45 licences; 37 of these licences were renewed and eight applications have been adjourned.
