Written Answers. - Latin Examinations.

Risteárd Ua Maolchatha

asked the Minister for Education if he will state in respect of each of the years 1937 to 1942, inclusive, and in respect of the first 20 boys who received highest marks in Latin in the Leaving Certificate Examination, (1) the examination number; (2) the marks received in Latin; (3) in Irish, and (4) in Mathematics; and if he will give the same information for the first 20 such boys who did the examination through English.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state, in respect of the Leaving Certificate Examinations held in each of the years 1937 to 1942, inclusive, the date upon which the prescribed course for the examination was first made known to the schools, in respect of each of the subjects (1) Latin, (2) French, and (3) History.

A new programme for secondary schools was introduced in 1925 and no changes were made in the courses set out in that programme in the subjects mentioned between that date and 1939. For the year 1940 and subsequent years the courses in Latin and French were altered, and the former practice of prescribing certain textbooks as part of the course in each language was adopted. The names of these textbooks were announced to the schools in each case before the beginning of the school year in which they were to be studied, viz., in June, 1939, for the 1940 examination, in June, 1940, for the 1941 examination, and in July, 1941, for the 1942 examination.

A change in the History course was also made and announced to the schools in June, 1939, but it did not come into operation until the 1941 examination. A further change, prescribing a more limited course in this subject for the 1942 examination, was announced to the schools in July, 1941.

A rotation of texts in Latin and French, and of courses in History, for some years has now been settled, and particulars are published in the current programme so that schools will in future know some years beforehand the courses prescribed in the various subjects.
