Vol. 91 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Labourers' Cottages Allotments.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will urge on county managers the desirability of allotting the additional half-acres of land due to cottage tenants in good time for the early sowing of next season; also, if he will consider handing over plots to tenants who have been granted cottages in cases where the cottages have not yet been erected owing to the emergency.

Of the 61,718 cottages provided up to 31st March, 1942, over 61,000 have been provided with substantial plots. There are no proposals for the provision of additional half acres awaiting the sanction of my Department. Rural authorities have been asked to co-operate in the campaign for increased food production and urged to provide land for allotments where necessary. With regard to the last part of the question, local authorities have been requested to take all practicable steps to make available for cultivation land which has been acquired for building schemes but on which cottages have not yet been built.
