Vol. 91 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Wexford Turf Supplies.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he has information concerning the scarcity of turf in many of the villages in County Wexford; and, if not, if he will inquire into the matter, and if he will take steps to have an adequate supply of turf provided.

It has been represented to my Department that consumers are experiencing difficulty in obtaining turf in some parts of the County Wexford. Adequate supplies of turf are, however, available for distribution by the merchants and any difficulty experienced by consumers must be attributed to the failure of licensed fuel merchants to purchase turf to meet their customers' requirements. This aspect of the matter is under examination.

Is the Minister aware that the scarcity is due in large measure to the fact that lorry owners consider the price stipulated for conveyance insufficient, and will he have that aspect of the matter examined?

I am aware that the fuel merchants think they should get a larger profit.

And the Minister is taking this into consideration in endeavouring to get turf for the people, because there undoubtedly is a scarcity?

That matter will be considered.
