Vol. 91 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Conveyance of School Children (County Mayo).

asked the Minister for Education whether the van service for the conveyance of school children has been withdrawn from the Glenamurra district of County Mayo; whether he is aware that children from the district who attend Kylemore School, Drummin, near Westport, are obliged to walk distances of from five to eight miles across mountains, and that in the absence of a transport service their attendances at school are not likely to comply with the provisions of the law, and whether, in these circumstances, he will state what steps he intends taking to replace the van service which was withdrawn.

The grant in aid of this van service was withdrawn from the 30th September last as the average number of children conveyed had fallen below the minimum required in the conditions specified for the continuance of the grant. An application for a renewal of the grant under revised conditions is at present receiving consideration and I expect to be in a position to announce a favourable decision in a few days.
