Vol. 91 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pensions of National Teachers.

asked the Minister for Education whether, in view of the steep increase in the cost of living, he is prepared to introduce proposals for an increase in the amount of the pensions payable to former national teachers, who are in receipt of superannuation far a period of four years or over.

I regret that I am not in a position to add anything to the replies I gave on this subject on the 18th February and the 5th May last.

Is the Minister aware that these pensioners have been very adversely affected by the increase in the cost of living, and is it not proposed to do anything whatsoever?

The Deputy will recognise that the matter of dealing with one class of pensioned public servant naturally raises the question of pensioned public servants generally?

Is the Minister, on his part, not willing to make suggestions, to make the position of these pensioners somewhat better, to do something that could be embraced in proposals to cover all the pensioners?

I am not in a position to do so.
