Vol. 91 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Allowances to Soldiers' Dependents.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware that the dependents of serving soldiers stationed considerable distances from their homes are exposed to grave hardships by reason of the inadequacy of the present scale of separation allowance, and whether having regard to the present high cost of commodities he is prepared to amend the regulations so as to make adequate provision for the dependents of the men concerned.

There is no provision in Defence Force Regulations for the payment of separation allowance as such, but if the Deputy has in mind the question of having the present rates of marriage allowance increased, I regret that a further increase cannot be granted in view of those which have been authorised since the commencement of the Emergency.
