Vol. 91 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Fishing Boats.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state the number of power fishing boats fishing at present out of each of the ports of Kinsale, Glandore, Union Hall, Baltimore, Schull, Bantry, Castletownbere, that are owned or controlled by members of the Irish Sea Fisheries Association.

Inasmuch as all fishing vessels are liable to operate at times away from their home ports it would be difficult to furnish precisely the information sought by the Deputy. The following figures are, however, probably close enough for his purpose:—

Power fishing boats owned or controlled by members of the Irish Sea Fisheries Association.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state the total amount advanced from State funds for the provision of fishing boats and fishing gear, and such like, to persons in West Cork prior to the inauguration of the Sea Fisheries Association; of that total sum how much has been (1) wiped out as irrecoverable; (2) how much was repaid; and (3) how much still remains due; and if there is any hope of recovering this last-mentioned amount.

I take it the Deputy has in mind loans advanced to fishermen for the provision of boats and gear during the period between the restoration of the National Government and the setting up of hire-purchase machinery for the same purpose by the Irish Sea Fisheries Association. The following figures, therefore, relate to the years 1923 to 1930, inclusive:—

Fishery loans advanced to West Cork fishermen in the period 1923 to 1930 (inclusive).

It is difficult to estimate the extent to which the last-mentioned sum may be recovered.
