Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Offences Under Emergency Powers Orders.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he will state for the years 1941, 1942, and 1943 to date (a) the number of prosecutions instituted by his Department for offences under Emergency Powers Orders; (b) the number of convictions obtained; and (c) the number and cost of inspectors employed in the administration of such Orders.

There were 409 prosecutions instituted by the Department of Supplies for offences against Emergency Powers Orders in 1941, 1,299 in 1942, and 2,572 from the 1st January to the 31st October, 1943. Convictions were obtained during these periods in 263, 1,154, and 2,177 cases respectively. There were 18 inspectors employed in the Department on the 31st December, 1941, 62 on the 31st December, 1942, and 80 on the 31st October, 1943. The cost of these inspectors was £5,345 in 1941, £22,580 in 1942, and £36,264 from the 1st January to 31st October, 1943.
