Vol. 93 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Free Legal Aid For Poor Persons.

asked the Minister for Justice whether he is aware of the need for extending the provision of free legal aid for poor persons charged with criminal offences—such service being at present confined to capital cases; and if he is prepared to introduce suitable amending legislation.

Mr. Boland

This matter has been under consideration, but up to the present no decision has been arrived at.

Can the Minister indicate when a decision is likely to be come to?

Mr. Boland

I cannot, and I am not too sure that the decision will be favourable, either.

The Minister is aware that such a service is in effective operation on the other side?

Mr. Boland

There is a service of a kind on the other side, but whether the service there, where the cost is borne by the local authority, would suit this country I am not sure.
