Vol. 97 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Air Service.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether, in view of modern air transport development and the likelihood of air transport being essential to future commerce, he will formulate a national air service scheme providing a service to provincial centres; and, in particular, if he will now take steps to acquire suitable airports, as sites for such airports, that are now available, may not be available in the future.

Who asks the question for Deputy Moran?

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Taoiseach.

The formulation of a national air service scheme is the responsibility of Aer Rianta, Teoranta, the National Air Transport Company set up under the Air Navigation and Transport Act, 1936, specifically for the purpose of implementing the Government's policy of civil aviation development. The company has already made a detailed study of the possibilities of internal air services in this country and continues to keep the matter under review. So far no economically justifiable scheme has been found practicable. To assist in the selection of suitable airport sites consideration is being given to the survey of localities at which airports might usefully be established to serve the possible future needs of airline operation, air tourists, and private flying. The acquisition of sites and the provision of airports, however, is primarily a matter for local authorities, who, by the Air Navigation and Transport Act, 1936, are given the necessary statutory powers.
