Vol. 98 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Teaching of “Eirish.”

asked the Minister for Education if he has had any study made of the simplified standard Irish called "Eirish" a form claimed by its author, Dr. Michael Murphy, to be many times easier and more suitable than any of the Gaelic dialects; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

asked the Minister for Education if he is prepared to allow teachers, who so wish, to teach "Eirish" instead of one of the Gaelic dialects at least during a short period for experimental purposes.

It is proposed to take the two questions together. The form of the language, known as "Eirish," together with the claims of its author, has been studied in my Department. It is considered to be unsuitable for use in schools and I am not prepared, therefore, to authorise its use in schools for experimental purposes.
