Vol. 98 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Summer Time in Rural Areas.

asked the Minister for Education whether, in view of the hardships imposed on children and parents in rural areas as a result of the continuation of summer time, he will say if he is prepared to issue instructions to teachers in such rural areas to revert to old time in national schools.

The regulations governing the administration of national schools provide that managers may arrange during the period of operation of the Summer Time Act, that the attendance period shall begin not later than 11.30 a.m. instead of 10.30 a.m. which is the time of commencement ordinarily required under the regulations.

In a considerable proportion of schools in rural areas, the managers have taken advantage of this concession to suit local requirements and I do not feel that I should interfere with the general discretion of school managers in this matter.
