Vol. 98 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Felling of Scrub Timber.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will make an Order to enable quantities of scrub timber to be felled at Glenshilan Wood, near Cappoquin, County Waterford, for use as firewood by the poor of Cappoquin who find it impossible to get fuel for the winter months, particularly as much of the scrub timber concerned will have to be burned, so as to make way for replanting.

Plans are already well advanced for the cutting of firewood trees in Glenshilan Wood, but they cannot be put into operation until means of access are completed by the erection of two bridges over a watercourse. This work is in hands.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will make an Order to enable quantities of scrub timber to be felled at the woods at Glenbower, Killeagh, County Cork, so as to provide fuel for the people of Killeagh and district.

The woods at Glenbower have already been cleared and replanted with the exception of a strip of reserved trees along the avenue. Scattered throughout the young plantations there is a number of mature oak which were reserved for sylvicultural reasons and it is not proposed to fell these trees until they have served the purpose for which they were retained. It may, however, be possible to make available in the near future a limited number of trees for firewood.
